A Cantonese morning begins at the teahouse, Tao Tao Ju or Panxi, where trolleys have rolled for a century. Rinse the bowl, pour the tea, pick up the har gow. This is Guangzhou's first lesson: breakfast is not the first meal of the day — it is why the day exists. Later, step into Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, it is the largest and best-preserved Qing-dynasty ancestral hall in Guangdong, celebrated for its masterful wood, brick, and stone carvings, along with its ceramic and plaster sculptures.

In the afternoon, wander Yongqing Fang — brick houses, granite lanes, the fabric of old Xiguan still intact. The Cantonese Opera Museum offers a free guided tour at 3:00 PM, a few steps away stands Bruce Lee's Ancestral Home, purchased by his father, Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-Chuen, in the 1940s. Now a free museum, it brings the legend's life story to life through vintage photographs and holographic displays.

At night, head to Beijing Road. Beneath your feet lies a glass-covered ancient roadway, from the Tang to the Republic eras, spanning over a thousand years, like an open history book. Above, the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees glows in golden light — this thousand-year-old temple, first built in the Southern Han dynasty, shines brilliantly at night, its warm yellow lanterns tracing the curves of its upturned eaves. Along the nearby Huifu East Road food street, the aromas of clay pot rice and fish skin drift through the air. You can stop for beef offal or rice rolls, eaten standing at a street stall — served on a paper plate, hot enough to burn your tongue. This is what Guangzhou has been eating for as long as anyone remembers.
